FY09 Public Policy Goals

SWE concentrates on the following two areas related to public policy:

  1. Strengthening America’s schools as presented in the SWE’s general position statement "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education and the Need for a Technologically Literate Workforce"

  2. How Title IX can be applied to STEM fields as presented in SWE’s general position statement "The Application of Title IX to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fields"

Strategic planning done by the SWE Board and the Government Relations and Public Policy (GRPP) Committee concluded that SWE will focus on the two areas mentioned above and that SWE will not unnecessarily duplicate public policy efforts of the existing organizations.

In Public Policy, SWE’s main goals are:
  • To educate SWE members about public policy happenings via monthly columns in SWE professional e-newsletter, articles in SWE magazine and sessions at the annual conference.

  • To provide tools to participate in public policy.

  • To have SWE volunteers engaged in public policy at the federal level.

  • To educate other professional societies and policy makers on how Title IX can be applied to STEM fields.

FY09 priority is to lead the diversity community to engage SWE members, other professional societies, and policy makers on how Title IX can be applied to STEM fields.

The long term goal is to be the STEM gender equity power broker at the federal level.
