CHICAGO – October 16, 2009 – The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is pleased to announce Craig Barnes as a recipient of the 2009 Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award for establishing a culture of inclusion in the workplace; introducing flexible work options; and for creating opportunities for women engineers in the United States and abroad.
Barnes is the chief technical officer for Cummins India Ltd, and chief executive officer and managing director for Cummins Research and Technology India. In these roles, Barnes leads all technical units and systems throughout India, and is responsible for financial planning, employee recruitment and engineering development. “Craig Barnes is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive engineering environment,” says Nora Lin, SWE president. “Under his leadership and mentorship, female engineers and technologists now account for 20 percent of his company’s business unit. Craig is also directly responsible for establishing a SWE interest group for his company’s division in India.” Barnes began his career as an engine design analyst at John Deere, where he was responsible for addressing design-related issues and developing product improvements. In 1983, Barnes began pursuing a graduate education, and served as an engineering teaching associate and research assistant at the University of Missouri in Rolla. Following his graduate studies, Barnes accepted a design engineering manager position at John Deere, where he worked until the late 1980s. When he joined Cummins Inc., Barnes immediately began leading multi-million dollar projects and quickly advanced within the company. “Craig’s lifelong track record illustrates his ability to support women engineers and make a difference in their careers,” says Karen Ramsey-Idem, engineering services director at Cummins Filtration. “He has spent his entire career identifying talent, nurturing employees to success and establishing inclusive cultures.” When Barnes began working with Cummins Filtration in 2002, he started mentoring the only female engineering manager on site. After a few years of meetings and coaching, Barnes successfully recommended his mentee for a worldwide associate leader position, and again two years later for a worldwide leader role. Barnes has become an advocate for SWE throughout the years, starting with a Cummins Filtration SWE Corporate Membership and later becoming a SWE Corporate Partnership Council member. A charter member of his local Upper Cumberland Professional Section, Barnes actively recruits at conferences and advocates professional development programs. In 2007, his local section hosted the Annual Conference, where Barnes held a vital role organizing and leading events. Barnes holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri in Rolla. The Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award celebrates and recognizes a man, company or institution with significant contributions to the acceptance and advancement of women in engineering. The 2009 Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award recipients will be recognized on October 16 at WE09, the Society’s Annual Conference. WE09 will take place at the Long Beach Convention Center, October 15-17, in Long Beach, Calif. Nearly 5,000 attendees include collegians and professionals from the industry, government and academia.
